Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
