Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
