New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Eric Adams revealed his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a recent development, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.

“It is crucial to energize the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how vital this election is,” Adams stated.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention globally and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would decline the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
