A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive of the incident remains unclear and no one has been arrested have taken place, as per the official statement.

Details of the Attack

Police said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a building near the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report said.

Security camera video showed a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what looked like a guard's attire shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but fell down a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.

Officials are asking members of the public who may have seen the suspects to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been tracking them to find their whereabouts," stated a police chief.

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"Words fail me. I don't have words," she said.

In a statement, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his influence "will endure".
