The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
