The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

An new term came to light several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by health professionals including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, consistent with how it denies everything it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A contest that once promoted harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
