The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
