The people of Israel observe second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks advance
People have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future governance of the region
Citizen Reaction
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until all the hostages come back no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the western district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"We are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me all night."
"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."
Medical Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said two more dead people had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, medical staff stated.
