Vehicle Evading Police Smashes into Tampa Bar, Leaving Four Deceased and Eleven Injured
An speeding vehicle that was evading law enforcement slammed into a busy nightspot in the early hours on the weekend, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring 11 in a historic district of Tampa, renowned for its nightlife and tourists.
Aerial patrol unit with the Tampa law enforcement agency spotted the vehicle driving dangerously on a highway at about just after midnight after police said the light-colored car had been observed street racing in another area, according to a police department announcement.
The Florida highway patrol intercepted the vehicle and tried to execute a maneuver that entails bumping a rear fender of a fleeing car to cause it to spin out, known as a pit, but it was ineffective.
Highway patrol officers “disengaged” as the car raced toward the historic downtown area near the city center, Tampa police reported. Ultimately, the driver lost control of the car and hit more than a dozen individuals outside the establishment, police confirmed.
3 individuals died at the location and a fourth person succumbed at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was admitted in critical condition, and 8 additional victims were being treated at area hospitals but were listed as not critical, police said. Two additional individuals experienced minor harm and declined treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 victims are grown individuals.
“What happened this morning was a senseless disaster, our hearts are with the loved ones of the deceased and all those who were affected,” the local police chief said in a message.
Officers identified the alleged driver as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who was booked on the weekend and is being detained at the Hillsborough county jail.
Legal records indicated the suspect has been accused with 4 charges of reckless driving causing death and four charges of serious fleeing or eluding with severe harm or death. All are first-degree felonies. No attorney was recorded for Sampson.
“The community is mourning the tragedy,” said Tampa’s mayor, who also was Tampa’s initial woman police chief, in a message on social media.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to obtain explanations,” the statement added.
Lately, some states and municipal authorities have pushed to limit the use of rapid vehicle pursuits to protect both civilians and police. After a rise in fatalities, a recent study funded by the federal authorities called for police chases to be minimized, explaining that the risk to individuals, officers and onlookers often exceeds the urgent requirement to apprehend a suspect.
However, Florida has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the region’s highway patrol revising its guidelines to relax limitations on the application of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis characterized these tactics as “dangerous” and “debated”.
